Water & Ice Dispenser
Most modern refrigerators have an option for a water and ice dispenser. The styles of refrigerators that dispensers are typically found are side-by-side or French door refrigerators since those designs allow the dispenser to be positioned at convenient heights.
At first, having a water and ice dispenser on the front of your fridge may appear to be an extravagance, but in truth it is quite beneficial! In fact, an external dispenser will save you money in the long run. Accessing water from the outside of the fridge saves the energy wasted from re-cooling either refrigerator sections after opening the door to get to pitchers of water or ice. It is also a less costly alternative to letting water from the tap run for a few seconds while it cools.
Water and ice dispensers also promote better health within the home. The refrigerator's water filter will protect your water and ice from harmful contaminants, such as lead and bacteria. Even if your home has a whole-house water filtration system, the filter installed in the refrigerator may catch contaminants that the whole-house filter isn't designed to resist.
While some refrigerators require an external inline water filter, most have their filtration systems built in! Refrigerator manufacturers have made installing water filter cartridges easy and they should be done so every six months. To find your refrigerator's filter, look either in the door, in the back of the top refrigerator shelf, or down in the bottom grill.
