In 1947, the Jenn-Air Products Company was founded by Lois J. Jenn in Indianapolis, IN. The company‘s original trade was the production of industrial fans. Their claim to fame surfaced in the early 1960s, when Jenn-Air invented the first self-ventilated downdraft range by combining one of their fans to the top of a cooktop range. In its rapid growth of popularity, Jenn-Air expanded its product line to include other household appliances, such as microwave ovens, refrigerators, and other small appliances.

Jenn-Air was acquired by the Maytag Corporation in 1982, which was then itself purchased by Whirlpool in 2006. Because of this, many Jenn-Air refrigerator water filters are made by Maytag or Amana.
