Is your water safe to drink? Does it contain toxic Lead?

Get results in 10 minutes with the WaterSafe Lead test kit.

Each WaterSafe lead test kit contains:

  • One lead test strip
  • One dropper pipette
  • One desiccant packet (this can be thrown away)
  • One sample vial
  • US Government EPA standards for safe levels of lead
ancient lead pipes

"What is lead?"

Lead is a dull, grey metal that's heavy, yet soft enough to be scratched by something as common as a household key. It is a very potent neurotoxin that can build up in your bones or soft tissues. Typically, it gets into drinking water through the corrosion of old pipes and fittings in your plumbing system.

"Are my pipes safe?"

Since August 1998, Section 1417 of the Safe Drinking Water Act prohibits anyone from using pipe or plumbing that isn't "lead-free". Unfortunately, even plumbing that's legally deemed "lead-free" may contain up to 8% lead. Signs of corrosion in plumbing include frequent leaks, stained dishes or laundry, or rust-colored water.

Some Precautions:

  • Keep the test kit out of reach of children and animals
  • Do not ingest any part of the test kit, or any water used in the test
  • Do not open any parts of the kit until you're ready to perform the test
  • Avoid using hot water or water containing bleach detergents
  • This is a one-time-use test kit - no part of it can be reused

Lead Test Instructions:

  1. Remove the contents of the foil packet. This includes one test vial, one test strip, one dropper pipette, and a desiccant (throw this away).
  2. With the dropper, insert exactly one dropper-full of the water you wish to sample into the test vial.
  3. Gently swirl the vial for a few seconds to stir the contents. Then set it down on a flat surface.
  4. Place the test strip into the vial, making sure that the arrows are pointing down. Let the vial sit undisturbed for 10 minutes.

  5. During this time, blue lines will appear on the strip. After 10 minutes, remove the strip from the vial and place it down on a flat surface with the arrows pointing to your left.

  7. The results are NEGATIVE if the left line (closer to the number 1) is darker than the line on the right (closer to number 2).

    negative strip

The results are POSITIVE if the right line is darker than the left or if both lines appear to be the same. If you receive positive results, your water may contain toxic levels of lead.

    positive strip

If no lines appear at all or if both lines are too light to tell, the test did not complete properly and you will need to repeat the test with a new test kit.

To meet EPA standards, the lead level should be no more than 15 parts per billion.
