What's the difference between the regular filter and the "Cyst" filter?

The 8171414 Filter removes the following impurities from your drinking water:

• 99.30% of Lead
• 99.99% of Cysts
• 97.00% of Chlorine
• 99.50% of Turbidity
• 99.96% of Particulates

As with all built-in refrigerator water filters, the 8171414 does not remove Fluoride

The 8171414 cartridge is tested and certified by NSF International to meet or exceed NSF/ANSI Standards 42 & 53

The Refrigerator Ice & Water Filter #8171414 should be replaced every 6 months or when the "change filter" light comes on - whichever comes first.

Installing your new water filter:

1. Twist the old filter a quarter-turn counterclockwise
2. Pull the filter straight down and discard (don't worry, the water will shut off automatically)
3. Push the new filter up into the fridge until it stops
4. Twist the filter a quarter-turn clockwise
5. Reset your "change filter" light (if your fridge has one)

Resetting your "change filter" light:

• Press the light switch (the one that the refrigerator door presses every time you close the door) 5 times within 10 seconds.

OR

• If the fridge has a filter button, press and hold it for 5-10 seconds.

There's also a slight gap between the two halves of the filter. If those details don't bother you, it's hard to find a better bargain.	(more info) The 8171413 should fit perfectly since Whirlpool Engineers designed both the filter system and the filter cartridge - there's no guesswork here. The filter only removes Chlorine and Particulates, so it's not the best choice if you're worried about lead or industrial chemicals. Great way to save a few bucks and still get the Whirlpool name.	(more info) Like the 8171413, the 8171414 should be a perfect fit for your fridge. The filter removes more impurities than the 8171413 - including Lead and Cysts. A great, no-compromise, genuine Whirlpool filter.
